Auto Insurance in Alabama

To drive a car, truck, or SUV in Alabama, you must have auto insurance. The state sets the minimum requirements for your coverage, and you could face fines for failing to meet the legal minimums. Here's what you need to know to get the coverage you need.

Bodily Injury Liability

This coverage applies to any medical expenses for others injured in an accident involving your vehicle. You must have at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in coverage. Of course, given rising medical costs, our agency recommends you carry higher limits of coverage in order to protect yourself from having to pay out of pocket and from potential lawsuits.

Property Damage Liability

This coverage applies to any damages to other drivers' vehicles or other physical property, like buildings, walls, road signs, etc. Your auto insurance policy must include at least $25,000 in coverage, though again, we recommend you carry higher limits, so you don't risk putting your assets in jeopardy.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Liability

Although auto insurance is required by law in Alabama, some drivers still don't maintain the necessary coverage. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays for injuries to you or your passengers if you are hit by someone who doesn't have insurance.  It also comes into play if the other driver's insurance limit is too low to cover your medical expenses fully. You must have at least $25,000 in coverage per person and $50,000 per accident, but we recommend that you match this coverage with your liability limits.

Coverage for Damage to Your Vehicle

Damage to your vehicle is covered by Comprehensive and Collision coverage.  Comprehensive protects your vehicle against such things as storm damage, theft, fire, glass breakage.  While Collision protects your vehicle against accidents involving other vehicles or stationary objects, like hitting a tree.  The damage to your vehicle is typically covered up to the value of your vehicle and you normally have to pay a deductible to get the damages repaired.  Other coverages such as Rental Car and Towing can be included for an extra charge.
